A Virtually Painless Experience

Dr. Filion uses the modern, minimally invasive no-scalpel vasectomy technique which involves using an ultra-fine needle to freeze the scrotum. Then, instead of using a scalpel to cut through the scrotum, a small pinhole is made with a gentle tissue separator. The vas deferens is then isolated and cut. No stitches required for the skin, less pain, faster recovery and return to work.

Considering a Vasectomy? Here’s What You Need to Know

A vasectomy is a highly effective, permanent form of contraception. While most men who choose this procedure are confident they don’t want more children, it’s crucial to consider any life changes that might affect your decision, such as a new relationship, financial changes, or career shifts. If you’re ready to proceed, here’s what to expect.

How the Procedure Works

Dr. Filion uses a no-scalpel vasectomy technique under local anesthesia. Through a small opening in the front scrotal wall, each vas deferens (the tubes that carry sperm) is carefully separated and closed, which means sperm will no longer be present in your semen. The incision is so small that it heals without stitches and is often barely visible by the next day.

Preparing for Your Vasectomy

Shave the scrotum a day before the procedure.

Avoid deodorants or powder in the genital area on the day of your appointment.

Arrange for someone to drive you home afterward.

Take it easy: plan to relax at home the afternoon and evening after your procedure.

Medications: Avoid aspirin for seven days before; have a light meal prior to your appointment.

Aftercare and Returning to Normal Activities

After your procedure, rest is key. Many men experience minimal discomfort, but if you do, Tylenol can help. Avoid Aspirin or NSAIDs for the first three days to allow the body’s natural healing response.

Work: Sedentary jobs typically resume within 2–3 days; for physically demanding jobs, plan for 5–7 days.

Exercise: Start with light walks by day 2, resuming full workouts in 3–5 days.

Sexual Activity: Wait at least seven days before resuming.

Swimming: Recommended only after 7 days to prevent infection risks.

Follow-Up:

Twelve weeks post-vasectomy, a semen test confirms the absence of sperm, indicating it’s safe to stop other forms of contraception.

Vasectomies are straightforward with minimal downtime. Ready to make your decision? Contact us today to book a consultation or ask any questions.

PATIENT EXPERIENCE

"10/10 would recommend. Definitely my best medical experience in Canada. Dr. Filion and staff do their best to make an uncomfortable procedure as comfortable as possible. All the extras (Saxx underwear, quality reusable ice bag, pain med prescription pre-filled, etc) we’re a nice touch and made the recovery as smooth as possible. If you are thinking of a vasectomy, treat yo’ self to a Dr. Filion vasectomy."
